The events of the past few years have proven that universal, bipartisan support for the most essential cornerstones of democracy – safe and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power – can no longer be taken for granted.
Pledging ourselves to the protection of these cornerstones is critically important. Their erosion is an urgent threat to our democratic republic and our national security.
At a time when Americans and their political parties find little common ground, we aim to carve out a safe, nonpartisan space in which elected officials (and others) can strengthen our national security by pledging themselves to democracy, safe and fair elections, and the rule of law.
The Safe and Fair Election Pledge asks every elected official to acknowledge these most essential cornerstones of democracy. Reluctance to do so should raise real questions among constituents, donors, and colleagues across the political spectrum.
This is simple, really. It's a nonpartisan space that we all should be able to share comfortably, and it's a piece of common ground from which we can begin to rebuild confidence in our country, our political system, and the people elected to represent us.
Team Democracy is nonpartisan, supporting no specific candidate, political party, or legislative initiative. The Safe and Fair Election Pledge is governed by these non-negotiable principles:
We believe that American elections can be both secure and widely accessible, and we support all means (technological and otherwise) to assured they are made both more secure, and more accessible.
We believe that our strength as a country has been, and will always be, tied to the health and the strength of our democratic institutions. Weakening them leaves us more vulnerable.
We believe in the peaceful transfer of power and reliance on the courts to resolve any election disputes. Violence associated with any aspect of our electoral process is unacceptable.
We believe that all elected officials should be open and accountable in their support for free, fair, and secure elections, and the peaceful transfer of power.
